'Freak' holiday season weather could become new normal, says Kayrros

January 11, 2023 (Investorideas.com Newswire) Unseasonable weather and corresponding volatility in energy demand could become the new normal, global climate technology company Kayrros has warned.

Over the period beginning before Christmas until the end of the first week of January, highly abnormal weather patterns in North America and Europe led to extreme changes in energy demand.

Kayrros, a global climate technology company and a world leader in environmental intelligence, found that in the U.S., cold weather at the end of December caused demand for gasoline to collapse, while in Europe, unseasonably warm temperatures led to a fall in power carbon emissions to their lowest level since the height of the pandemic in spring 2020, dubbed 'Black April'.

The climate technology company, which supplies data and insights to organisations around the world also showed that European heating demand fell, bringing gas power emissions to May 2018 lows.

This exacerbated the effects of the curtailments imposed on energy-intensive industries, sending notional demand for European carbon credits to their second-lowest level on record.

Antoine Rostand, founder and President of Kayrros, suggested that the 'freak' weather seen over the holidays could be a sign of things to come, as climate change continues to disrupt typical meteorological patterns.

"One of the many symptoms of climate change is erratic weather," he said.

"What we've seen over the holiday season is only the latest reminder that we not only need to bring down global emissions urgently-particularly methane emissions, which are more consequential in the short term-but that we need to consider climate adaptation.

"What's clear is that we must have access to precise real-time data so we can navigate the rising uncertainty. We must also keep innovating: innovation will be absolutely essential to improving how we manage and relate to our changing world."

Kayrros also measured fluctuating energy demand over the holidays in China, where a change in Covid policy led to a spike in air travel and jet fuel demand. Demand fell as anecdotal reports of a rise in Covid cases grew, only to bounce back, suggesting infection rates may have peaked in part of the country.
