P.D. Jackson Family Foundation Donates to Create New Basketball Court in Allen, S.D.
ALLEN - July 24, 2023 (Investorideas.com Newswire) Lakota community on the Pine Ridge Reservation gets first Basketball Court
One Spirit, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing support for the Lakota people of Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota reports on the recent opening of the first basketball court on the Pine Ridge Reservation .
The P.D. Jackson Family Foundation donation helped build a basketball court, named Wita Najiin ("Standing Together"). The court will show youth on the reservation that their community values and supports them as does the Foundation. It also provides access to a safe and healthy recreational activity in an area with few other options.
"Many years ago when I was an NBA player for the NY Knicks, I led youth basketball camps on Pine Ridge," said Phil Jackson in a prepared statement. "The experience of spending time with the Oglala nation enlarged and enriched my life. I only hope that I had half the impact on the Oglala children that I worked with as they had on me."
In addition to playing for the NY Knicks, Jackson was head coach of the Chicago Bulls from 1989 to 1998 and the author of Sacred Hoops, a memoir about his calm, not chaotic, coaching philosophy.
"I still carry with me the hospitality that I received here and many longstanding friendships," Jackson's statement read. "I also have lasting memories of my naming ceremony in which I was honored with the name 'Ohoko Wabli,' as well as the sweat lodge prayers for myself and the spiritual growth of the Chicago Bulls. The foundation of which I am the president is proud to be able to give the young men and women of this nation a recreation facility to develop their game, to find their passion and to learn about themselves as competitors and as friends."
Nearby to the court sits a plaque commemorating the donation that reads "Philámayaye to the P.D. Jackson Family Foundation for supporting the Lakota youth of Allen, S.D." Philámayaye means "thank you" in Lakota.
"We want to thank the P.D. Jackson Family Foundation for their support of the Lakota people," said Jeri Baker, executive director of One Spirit. "Their gift will help create a legacy of health and wellness for the Lakota people. Thank you, again, for standing together with us."
