One Spirit Lakota Charity and Minnesota Businesses Create Innovative Employment Program for Indigenous Youth, @OneSpiritLakota
Rapid City, SD - April 4, 2022 (Investorideas.com Newswire) One Spirit , an all-volunteer worldwide group that seeks to help the Oglala Lakota tribe of Native Americans, reports on employment program.
An endemic problem on Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota is a lack of employment opportunities for youth. This leads to high rates of youth drug, alcohol, and suicide among the Lakota population.
One Spirit, a charity that works to "Help the Lakota Help Themselves," with the involvement of Sarah Hamilton, a business owner in the Arrowhead Country of northeastern Minnesota, created a program that connects Lakota young people with Minnesota businesses in a popular tourist destination that, owing to a relatively small resident population, has a chronic shortage of labor during the summer season.
In its first year, donated funds allowed the outfitting and transportation for young Lakota who applied to travel to Minnesota (sometimes the first time they had left Pine Ridge or flown on an airplane) to earn wages, enjoy outdoor activities and cultural programs that respected Lakota culture, and return to the reservation after an enriching experience not otherwise possible. Some participants were even offered ongoing employment and training that will enable them to help themselves and their families.
With additional funding and outreach, this unique partnership between the Lakota, One Spirit, and the business community of northeastern Minnesota is planning to expand the program in the coming year. In addition, the Chamber of Commerce of Hampton Beach, New Hampshire, a prime beach resort town, has reached out to One Spirit to also take part in the Employment Program this coming summer, offering further employment, training, and cultural enrichment between young Lakota and other cultures.
About Us https://www.onespiritlakota.org/
One Spirit is an all-volunteer worldwide group that seeks to help the Oglala Lakota tribe of Native Americans achieve happier, healthier lives, within the context of their remarkable and unique history and culture.
The philosophy of One Spirit is summed up in our motto: "Helping the Lakota Help Themselves." Our programs are dedicated to providing the tools and employment to bring healthy food, fuel, and cultural support to a tribe that suffers severe nutritional shortages in a food desert, lacks employment opportunities (almost 90% unemployment), and facilities to support children and the elderly culturally and in providing better living circumstances.
We employ Lakota oyate ("people") members to deliver food support to large numbers of Lakota families monthly and through a system of food pantries. Our firewood support pays Lakota to cut, split, and distribute firewood and improved wood stoves, which is a main source of heating in poorly insulated homes during the frigid South Dakota winters on the Pine Ridge Reservation. We funded the construction of the Charging Buffalo Meat House, which enables the harvesting and distribution of buffalo and game meats around the reservation, and soon will gain USDA certification, allowing products to be sold off the reservation. This will provide income and employment to more Lakota.
