• The chart above reflects Cannabis Cultivation & Retail sector stock prices indexed to 1/1/20 and shows that although both small and large competitors in both U.S. and Canada have recovered from their March lows, only large U.S. competitors have YTD gains.
• Large U.S. cultivators (> $100 million market cap) are now trading at approximately 108% of their levels from the beginning of 2020. Eight of the fourteen companies we track in this grouping have registered gains for the year.
• Only 3 of the 14 small U.S. cultivators (<$100 million market cap) we track are trading above their beginning of the year levels and they have underperformed their Canadian counterparts.
• We believe that this reflects investor’s appetite for the corporate size, stock liquidity, and ability to raise capital on the part of these larger operators – and the fact that larger U.S. competitors are utilizing their higher stock prices as acquisition currency, fueling the uptick in M&A we noted in our Chart of the Week last week.
• The large Canadian LPs have rebounded off the March lows but their performance was hurt by the lower prices of Aurora, Hexo, and Tilray. TerrAscend is the only large Canadian competitor with YTD gains and it is largely based on the strength of the company's U.S. operations.
