Drug Policy Alliance Statement on USDA Industrial Hemp Rules
Win for Hemp Industry Workers with Felony Convictions, But More Work to Be Done
Washington, D.C. - October 30, 2019 (Investorideas.com Newswire) Below is a statement from Grant Smith, Deputy Director of National Affairs at the Drug Policy Alliance, in response to the USDA’s Industrial Hemp Rules announced today:
"We are pleased that, in the final rules, we were able to get the felony conviction ban removed for hemp workers, so that they can at least participate in the industry. Unfortunately, more work still remains to completely eliminate the ban, so those with felony convictions can-not just work in the industry-but also lead it by being able to obtain licenses of their own. It is inconceivable that those that have been the most harmed by prohibition would then be further inflicted by being barred from taking part in the new legal economy."
About Drug Policy Alliance
The Drug Policy Alliance envisions a just society in which the use and regulation of drugs are grounded in science, compassion, health and human rights, in which people are no longer punished for what they put into their own bodies but only for crimes committed against others, and in which the fears, prejudices and punitive prohibitions of today are no more. Our mission is to advance those policies and attitudes that best reduce the harms of both drug use and drug prohibition, and to promote the autonomy of individuals over their minds and bodies.
