Umpire Remains at US Open Despite Controversial Move, Pats' Gronkowski Gets $4.3 Million in Incentives Added to Contract and Usain Bolt Debuts as Footballer
A controversy ensued at the U.S. Open yesterday after umpire Mohamed Lahyani got up from his seat during a changeover to speak with a struggling Nick Kyrgios. Kyrgios, who had lost his first set and was behind 3-0 in his second against French player Pierre-Hugues Herbert, went on to win the match 4-6, 7-6 (6), 6-3, 6-0 after Lahyani's intervention. Though U.S. Tennis Association spokesman Chris Widmaier told the Associated Press that Lahyani went "beyond protocol", he would not be punished due to his "exemplary track record as an international tennis official."
"He now has a better understanding of what our protocols are and was informed that he needs to stick to those protocols for the rest of the tournament," Widmaier said. "Each of his matches will be monitored."
Elsewhere in the tournament Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, Alexander Zverev and others won their matches to advance to the next round on the men's side, and Maria Sharapova, Kiki Bertens, Angelique Kerber and others prevailed on the women's side.
Tight end Rob Gronkowski of the New England Patriots had his contract reworked to add $4.3 million in incentives, ESPN reports. Of that amount, Gronkowski can earn $1 million in per-game roster bonuses, and by hitting three of the following four incentives: $1.1 million for 70 or more catches, $1.1 million for 1085 receiving yards, $1.1 million for 80 percent playing time and $1.1 million for nine or more touchdown catches. When asked on Tuesday about his expectations for an improved contract, Gronkowski said:
"I'm always open for that. That's not really my focus. I got a long season ahead and just trying to focus on what I need to really do and just let everything else play out."
Eight-time Olympic sprinting gold medalist Usain Bolt played his first football (soccer) game for the Central Coast Mariners today. Bolt himself did not score, but the Mariners ended up winning 6-1 against the Central Coast Select. Bolt, who is on trial with the team, told Fox Sports:
"I was a little bit nervous, but as soon as I got on the field the nerves went away. I wish I had more touches, but I'm not fit yet. In four months I'll be playing like one of the guys."
