Serena Williams scored a first round victory at the Cincinnati Open yesterday, beating Australian Daria Gavrilova 6-1, 6-2. This follows Williams surprisingly lopsided 6-1, 6-0 loss to British player Johanna Konta at the opening of the Stanford Classic on July 31. The Guardian quotes Williams on her comeback year:

"I realised after Wimbledon that this is a journey for me," the 36-year-old Williams said. "It's going to come and I'm taking it one day at a time. I'm just fortunate to be back here on these courts playing tennis. Everything is truly amazing."

Following the PGA Championship in Bellerive, MO, the eight players currently qualified for the U.S. Ryder Cup team are: Brooks Koepka, Dustin Johnson, Justin Thomas, Patrick Reed, Bubba Watson, Jordan Spieth, Rickie Fowler and Webb Simpson. The Associated Press quotes U.S. Ryder Cup captain Jim Furyk on the possibility of Tiger Woods being included on the team as one of four possible wild cards.

"We want the players who are going to help us be successful. He's playing very well. I think there's a lot of folks out there who probably think he can help us. Really, what we wanted to talk about today was the top eight players. I realize Tiger is a story. I realize he's playing very well, and I'm excited to see that."

Victoria Azarenka, a former World No. 1 and two-time Australia Open winner, and 2004 U.S. Open champion Svetlana Kuznetsova join Amanda Anisimova, Claire Liu, Asia Muhammad, Whitney Osuigwe and Harmony Tan as the seven wildcards for the U.S. Open confirmed on Wednesday by the United States Tennis Association.

The AP reports that West Virginia has licensed its first casino, The Hollywood Casino in Charles Town, for legal sports betting. Danielle Boyd, legal counsel for the Lottery Commission, said that the casino would begin installing betting software on August 21 with the aim of offering betting to the public by September 1.
