Molinari Wins Open, Merritt Wins Barbasol, Hamilton Scores Dramatic Victory at German Grand Prix and Fraile, Nielsen Win Stages at Tour de France

Francesco Molinari won the Claret Jug at the 147th Open at Carnoustie, Scotland. The 35-year-old Molinari finished with eight under par, becoming the first Italian to win The Open. Title defender Jordan Spieth finished with four under par and three-time Open winner Tiger Woods impressed his critics by finishing five under par. golfchannel.com quotes Woods on his performance:

"It was a blast. I was saying earlier that I need to try and keep it in perspective because, beginning of the year, if they'd have said you're playing the Open Championship, I would have said I'd be very lucky to do that."

Meanwhile Troy Merritt has won his second career PGA Tour win at the Barbasol Championship, according to Golf Digest.

Lewis Hamilton scored his fourth win this year, and 66th of his career, at the German Grand Prix yesterday. The Associated Press reports that the British racer won after race leader Sebastian Vettel crashed, which prompted Hamilton to go to the pits. He then aborted the move to rejoin the race, which is prohibited, and ended up being reprimanded by the stewards. Hamilton commented on the reprimand:

"It's been the most emotional day, up and down. No one ever wants to go see the stewards because they have the hardest job. I was just 100 percent open with them. They could see how confusing it was."

While today is a rest day in the Tour de France, the weekend saw Spanish cyclist Omar Fraile take Stage 14 on Saturday and Dane Magnus Cort Nielsen win Stage 15 yesterday. Chris Froome, whose win this year would equal the record of five, is "happy" to cede the victory to teammate Geraint Thomas, according to the Guardian.

"As long as there is a Team Sky rider on the top step of the podium in Paris, I'm happy," Froome said. Asked directly if he would sacrifice his hopes of a fifth Tour crown to help Thomas, Froome simply said: "Yes."

Thomas is currently ranked first and Froome second in the standings.
