Cowboys' Witten Retiring from NFL, Steelers' Shazier Given $8.26 Million USD and Jays' Donaldson Back in Action

Dallas Cowboys tight end Jason Witten is retiring from the NFL and joining ESPN's Monday Night Football as an analyst, according to an ESPN report. Sources say it was a difficult decision for Witten:

"Witten wrestled with the decision for the past week, alternating almost hourly between taking the job and playing a record 16th season for the Cowboys, sources said. He has informed owner and general manager Jerry Jones and coach Jason Garrett of his decision."

The Pittsburgh Steelers have converted the majority of injured linebacker Ryan Shazier's base-salary into a signing bonus according to ESPN. Shazier, who is recovering from spinal surgery for an injury received last season against the Cincinnati Bengals, will receive $8.26 million USD of his $8.72 million USD base salary immediately. ESPN reports that though Shazier may not play again, his recovery has shown some headway:

"While his football career remains in doubt at this point, he has made notable progress, including an inspiring moment in which he walked across the stage to announce a team draft choice during the 2018 NFL draft last week in Arlington, Texas."

theScore reports that third baseman Josh Donaldson has been activated from the disabled list (DL) to rejoin the Toronto Blue Jays in Cleveland today. Donaldson was put on the DL after sustaining inflammation in his right shoulder on April 13. With Donaldson back, first baseman Justin Smoak was correspondingly placed on the paternity list.
