Powerful East Coast Storm Followed by Stronger Arctic Blast

"This next round of cold is expected to exceed the record-setting cold seen in the East on New Year's Day," said Bradley Harvey, Lead Meteorologist at Radiant Solutions.

Gaithersburg - January 3, 2018 ( Newswire) The East Coast faces a continued wintry onslaught as a powerful winter storm is followed by another round of record-setting chill. Low pressure will rapidly strengthen as it tracks near the East Coast today and tomorrow, bringing significant wintry impacts from Florida to Maine. Accumulating snow will be seen along the Southeast Coast while blizzard conditions are expected for parts of the Northeast. Snowfall amounts upwards of a foot are projected for the Boston area, and wind gusts of 50-70 mph near the coast along with the heavy snow will bring a high threat for power outages.

In the wake of the storm, the polar vortex plunges southward and brings yet another round of Arctic chill. Sub-zero lows and dangerously-cold wind chills will be commonplace in the Northeast while highs at the end of the week will be at record low levels in the teens and single digits. "This next round of cold is expected to exceed the record-setting cold seen in the East on New Year's Day," said Bradley Harvey, Lead Meteorologist at Radiant Solutions. He adds, "The extreme chill along with the threat of power outages from the preceding winter storm presents a potentially dangerous situation for the Northeast." From a heating demand perspective, the first six days of January are expected to yield a record high total of 257 US gas-weighted heating degree days (GWHDDs) for the period in data dating back to 1950.

A pattern change is anticipated after this early January Arctic outbreak with opportunities for weaker, more transient cold across the eastern half of the US followed by a milder pattern beyond. January as a whole is projected to be the coldest since 2014 (polar vortex influenced season) with a current forecast of 1025 US GWHDDs. January 2014 recorded 1048 US GWHDDs.
