Wine News: New Zealand Winery Stoneleigh Unveils Wines From Marlborough's Golden Mile

"Latitude" Range Showcases Distinctive Terroir

NEW YORK, NY - September 3, 2014 ( newswire) Sustainable, top-selling New Zealand winery, Stoneleigh, announced today that the release of its newest range will be made available in the United States this month. Sourced from vineyards within the "Golden Mile" of New Zealand's Marlborough region, the new Stoneleigh Latitude collection represents the unique terroir of what many consider to be the best vineyard region in the country.

A strip in the sub-region of Rapaura, the Golden Mile has a unique microclimate with flinty soil renowned for its exceptional grape-growing conditions. The sub-appellate is warmer than the rest of Marlborough, providing heat to the area's stony riverbeds during the day, which then warm the grapes at night. This natural phenomenon, coupled with the free-draining stony soils, produces a distinctively crisp, fresh and elegant profile.

Stoneleigh Latitude Sauvignon Blanc has aromas of citrus blossom, grapefruit and lemon, with a palate weighty with honeydew melon and grapefruit, followed by a lingering minerality. Juice is fermented at low temperatures to retain the aromatic qualities with a component fermented in large, aged oak cubes to add texture and weight.

The Pinot Noir has toasty oak, black cherries and raspberries on the nose, followed by doris plum, dark chocolate and berry fruit on the palate. Selected parcels were cold soaked and then underwent slow fermentation in open-topped fermenters, before spending nine months in a mixture of new and old French oak barriques before careful blending.

Stoneleigh Latitude Chardonnay exhibits aromas of brioche, peach and toasty oak, and a succulent rich flavor of peaches and cream, laced with citrus blossom notes. Harvested at peak flavor intensity and bag pressed, the free-run juices were barrel fermented, in French and Hungarian oak, and lees stirred for up to four months to add palate weight and complexity.
