London - April 30, 2013 (Investorideas.com renewable energy newswire) Clean Energy Pipeline, the online daily financial news and data service on the clean energy sector, today releases the 2nd edition of its 'Clean Energy Europe Finance Guide 2013,' which includes a research report submitted by Turquoise International Ltd entitled "Opportunities in Cleantech Investing".
The 'Clean Energy Europe Finance Guide 2013' is the definitive desktop reference source of all investors, project developers and service providers active in in the region during the past year. A full copy of the guide can be downloaded here. Turquoise International Ltd is a London-based merchant bank specialising in Energy and the Environment. Ian Thomas, Managing Director, contributed to the guide with a detailed review of the alternative investment opportunities in clean technology outside of wind and solar.
"Opportunities in Cleantech Investing"
Around a decade ago, renewable energy/cleantech emerged as a recognised investment class distinct from the broader power and technology sectors. Since then, the vast majority of investment into the sector, both quoted and unquoted, has been deployed in wind and solar, encompassing project assets, technology and the manufacturing/supply chain. Indeed, according to data compiled by Clean Energy Pipeline, more than 73% of all cleantech and renewables investment since 2009 has flowed to wind and solar. This is not an unreasonable outcome given the relative maturity of those technologies.
Venture capital and private equity investment (excluding buyouts) in European clean energy companies totalled $1.4 billion in 2012, a 28% decrease on the $1.9 billion recorded in 2011. The number of investments has also decreased – only 132 investments were completed in 2012, significantly less than the 157 tracked in 2011. Douglas Lloyd, CEO of VB/Research Ltd, publisher of Clean Energy Pipeline's news and data service commented: "Reduced investment activity and an absence of landmark deals resulted in a substantial year-on-year fall in investment last year. However, the year ended on a high note with investment in the last quarter 3x higher than during the corresponding period in 2011."
