Point Roberts, WA - March 22, 2013 (www.investorideas.com newswire) Investorideas.com staff: Investorideas.com, an investor research portal specializing in sector research for independent investors reports on the top percentage gainers on the NASDAQ for March 22nd, 2013.
Anacor Pharmaceuticals Inc., (NASDAQ:ANAC) trading at $6.29 gained $1.45 or 29.96% on a high volume of 4,967,510 shares, making it today's top percentage gainer on the NASDAQ.
Shares of Anacor Pharmaceuticals Inc. climbed in premarket trading today after the drug developer reported strong data from a mid-stage study of a potential chronic rash treatment yesterday.
The Palo Alto, Calif., company is testing a topical drug labeled AN2728 as a treatment for atopic dermatitis, which most commonly appears in childhood. Anacor said yesterday that lesions treated with the ointment improved throughout a 28-day treatment period, with most improvement happening within the first week.
The ointment appears to be faster and superior to the performance of currently approved treatments like Elidel that do not involve steroids.
Halozyme Therapeutics Inc., (NASDAQ:HALO) trading at $6.09 rose by $0.82 or 15.56% on a volume of 2,670,236 shares.
Baxter and Halozyme Therapeutics announced that the European Medicines Agency's Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use has granted a Positive Opinion to Baxter for the use of HyQvia as replacement therapy for adult patients with primary and secondary immunodeficiencies. The product is a combination of human normal immunoglobulin and recombinant human hyaluronidase, which facilitates the dispersion and absorption of the IGSC. Upon receiving marketing authorization from the European Commission, Baxter plans to launch HyQvia in selected countries in the European Union later this year.
Globus Maritime Limited (NASDAQ:GLBS) trading at $2.34 moved up $0.29 or 13.96% on a light volume of 8,967 shares.
Eagle Bulk Shipping Inc., (NASDAQ:EGLE) trading up at $3.89 gained $0.48 or 14.16% on a volume of 1,407,860 shares.
Bulk shipping stocks continued to rise with EGLE helping lead the charge with DryShips and Frontline making similar moves. All the companies are down more than 50 percent from their 2008 levels and lagged the broader market by a huge margin until the start of the year, but their recent action could signal a shift in sentiment.
While there hasn't been much news on the industry of late, larger macro forces seem to be lining up favorably. One factor is strength in the broader transportation sector, which broke to
all-time highs in January and has been outperforming every other major industry group since.
The fundamentals of the shipping business could also be on the verge of major improvement. The catalyst is demand from China, where increased steel production is expected to boost demand.
