December 5, 2012 (www.investorideas.com newswire) Rebecca Adamson, founder of First Peoples Worldwide, has been honored by MAKERS: Women Who Make America, a multi-platform media initiative by PBS that showcases the stories of groundbreaking women who are making history in the arts, business, education, sports, science, and political activism. She is the only Native American to be featured in the project.
Interviews with Adamson and many other influential women are featured on the MAKERS website, and will be included in a documentary telling the story of the modern American Women's Movement, scheduled to air February 2013. Since its launch in 2012, the Makers website has had more than 11 million unique visitors and has highlighted Hillary Rodham Clinton, Alice Walker, Gloria Steinem and Sandra Day O'Connor, among many others. Adamson says, "I come from a matrilineal society, and having women be a source of power was there in my DNA."
Adamson is a Cherokee economist and a visionary leader and activist for Indigenous Peoples. Adamson's work has shown that Indigenous Peoples can be a powerful force for transforming today's business models. She utilizes advocacy and engagement of corporate social responsibility, and the wisdom and paradigms of Indigenous economics as tools to catalyze change.
Her work has established a new field of culturally appropriate, values-driven development. She created the first reservation-based micro-enterprise loan fund in the United States as well as the first tribal investment model. She spearheaded a national movement for reservation land reform, and pushed for legislation that established new standards of accountability regarding federal trust responsibility to Native Americans.
To support the initiative, PBS has lined up an educational and community outreach campaign to record community stories through the local PBS member stations and to bring local MAKER initiatives to schools across the country.
Watch Adamson's video here and stay tuned for the PBS special next year!
