News about AARP Florida

MIAMI, FL. - October 1, 2012 (Investorideas.com Energy stocks newswire) One day ahead of oral arguments set for October 4th before the Florida Supreme Court in a major challenge to the controversial "nuclear cost recovery" payment scheme for proposed new reactors in the Sunshine State, a bipartisan group of elected officials and the AARP will hold a news conference at 11:30 a.m. EDT Wednesday (October 3rd).

The widely criticized advance-payment "nuclear tax" system – under which millions of Florida consumers are saddled in advance with higher utility bills for nuclear reactors that may never even be built – is being pushed by Florida Power & Light (FPL) and Progress Energy Florida (PEF).

In addition to a bipartisan group of state lawmakers who are actively working to repeal this legislation, numerous municipalities -- including the cities of North and South Miami, Pinecrest, Biscayne Park, Yankeetown, Crestview as well as the Miami-Dade League of Cities and Broward League of Cities -- have all passed resolutions opposing the nuclear cost recovery law.

News event speakers will be:

  • Florida State Senator Mike Fasano (R-District 11);
  • Florida State Representative Michelle Rehwinkel Vasilinda (D-District 9);
  • Lauderdale-By-The-Sea Mayor Roseann Minnet, chair of the Broward League of Cities Sustainability Committee; and
  • Charles Milsted, associate state director, AARP Florida.

TO PARTICIPATE: You can join this live, phone-based Florida news conference (with full, two-way Q&A) at 11:30 a.m. EDT on October 3, 2012 by dialing 1 (888) 437-2685. Ask for the "Florida nuclear cost recovery Supreme Court challenge" telenews event.

CAN'T PARTICIPATE?: A streaming audio replay of the Florida news event will be available on the Web at http://216.30.191.148/FLnucleartax/ as of 5 p.m. EDT on October 3, 2012.
