The failure of failure of Congress's Super Committee on Monday could have a serious impact on the defense sector. Because the super committee could not reach a deal, $1.2 trillion in other federal spending could come into effect automatically with potential defense cuts coming in at $600 Billion. With such a heated lead in to the National Security Debate, there were some clear leaders and losers according to Investorideas.com. Who were the winners? … Newt Gingrich, Michele Bachmann, Mitt Romney and Herman Cain from our viewpoint.

Investorideas.com - Dawn Van Zant

Ron Paul was a stand alone in his idealism that can be commended but unfortunately has no real world application in our current times. His comments to stand by a good- will policy and "mind our own business" is not an approach most of us our willing to risk. He is very clear he does not support getting involved in another war. His most valid comment was that the biggest threat to US National Security was the current financial condition.

As a female, I have to say I liked Michele Bachmann in this debate for several reasons. In a debate on National Security, her family is deeply involved in the military so she speaks from the heart as well as politically with reason. She took a very strong stand on Pakistan, noting it was one of the most violent and unstable nations but the US needed to maintain some ties because of the intelligence that came out of Pakistan. Her main concern was that nuclear weapons could find their way back into the US if all ties were broken.

She commented Obama had been too weak with Iran and had given them the luxury of time.

She also stated her concerns over the failure of the Super Committee and the inability to address US debt; that every time the US makes interest payments to China, who they are in hawk to, they are helping to strengthen their military and deplete the US military.

Newt Gingrich was self assured, strong and had conviction with every answer he gave. Even if you don't like him, you have to respect his ability to debate. He made bold statements on an all energy policy and how if the US was serious it would create an energy policy that would open up all opportunities in the US making it independent as well as be able to provide Europe with its energy needs.

Mitt Romney commented that President Obama was spending money foolishly and also stated that Obama had an agenda to befriend his foes.

Herman Cain came across strong on several issues and was differentiated with his answer on the closing question of what is the unexpected threat we need to be prepared for, he responded "cybersecurity". Newt Gingrich did include cybersecurity following Cain and also included Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) and weapons of mass destruction.

Mitt Romney felt that the unexpected threat long term was China, the immediate threat was Iran and he agreed with Rick Santorum on Latin America.
