American Water's Annual Report Goes Green

Virtual Annual Report Saves Approximately 300 Trees and 98,000 Gallons of Water

VOORHEES, N.J.--March 31 2009 --American Water Works Company, Inc. (NYSE: AWK), the largest investor-owned U.S. water and wastewater utility company, announced today that it has launched a virtual annual report to shareholders reducing the amount of printing traditionally associated with such materials. Taking advantage of the Securities and Exchange Commission’s innovative new Notice and Access rules, the company has posted its proxy materials and annual report on Form 10-K on a new Web site www.amwaterannualreport.com.

“Our new interactive web-based annual report helps American Water do its share to preserve and renew Earth’s limited resources," said Donald Correll, president and chief executive officer of American Water. “Caring for our environment is a large part of helping to ensure we will have quality water for generations to come.”

The company estimates it will save approximately 300 trees and 98,000 gallons of water, which would have been used in the paper-making process. The virtual report, which features several of the company’s leadership team and 40 video segments, outlines American Water’s 2008 accomplishments and challenges, and goals for 2009.

“By employing the latest in technology, we are able to deliver important company information to our stakeholders while re-affirming our commitment as environmental stewards,” added Correll. “I also believe the virtual report is a far more engaging way to relay American Water’s strategic direction.”

Founded in 1886, American Water is the largest investor-owned U.S. water and wastewater utility company. With headquarters in Voorhees, N.J., the company employs more than 7,000 dedicated professionals who provide drinking water, wastewater and other related services to approximately 15 million people in 32 states and Ontario, Canada.
