  • Israel's Netanyahu to address Congress amid strained ties with Obama (Tue, 03 Mar 2015 09:23:22 -0500)

Israel's PM Netanyahu addresses the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) policy conference in WashingtonBy Dan Williams and Doina Chiacu WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A quarter of Democratic U.S. lawmakers will not attend Tuesday's speech by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who will escalate his campaign against President Barack Obama's Iran diplomacy in an address that has put unprecedented stress on the two leaders' already strained ties. Although given the cold shoulder by the administration, Netanyahu has offered an olive branch, saying he meant no disrespect to Obama by accepting an invitation to address U.S. lawmakers that was orchestrated by the president's rival Republicans. By early Tuesday, about 60 of the 232 congressional Democrats said they planned to sit out the speech to protest what they see as a politicization of Israeli security, an issue on which Congress is usually united. House of Representatives Speaker John Boehner, the Republican whose unilateral invitation to Netanyahu triggered the diplomatic crisis, said on Tuesday he expected a capacity crowd to hear the speech and played down any divisions.

  • Iran calls Obama's 10-year nuclear demand 'unacceptable' (Tue, 03 Mar 2015 08:43:13 -0500)

Iranian Foreign Minister Zarif addresses Human Rights Council at UN in GenevaBy Arshad Mohammed MONTREUX, Switzerland (Reuters) - Iran on Tuesday rejected as "unacceptable" U.S. President Barack Obama's demand that it freeze sensitive nuclear activities for at least 10 years, but said it would continue talks aimed at securing a deal, Iran's semi-official Fars news agency reported. "Iran will not accept excessive and illogical demands," Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif was quoted as saying by Fars. Zarif and U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry sat down for a second day of meetings hours after Obama had told Reuters that Iran must commit to a verifiable halt of at least 10 years on sensitive nuclear work for a landmark atomic deal to be reached. The aim of the negotiations is to persuade Iran to restrain its nuclear program in exchange for relief from sanctions that have crippled the oil exporter's economy.

  • Russians stand in line to mourn by coffin of slain Nemtsov (Tue, 03 Mar 2015 08:45:31 -0500)

Pallbearers carry coffin with the body of Russian leading opposition figure Boris Nemtsov during a memorial service before the funeral in MoscowBy Alexander Winning and Gabriela Baczynska MOSCOW (Reuters) - Thousands of Russians, many carrying red carnations, on Tuesday filed past the coffin of Boris Nemtsov, the Kremlin critic whose killing last week, friends say, showed the hazards of speaking out against Russian President Vladimir Putin. Aides to Putin deny any involvement in killing Nemtsov, who was shot in the back four times on Friday within sight of the Kremlin walls. Nemtsov's friends say he was the victim of an atmosphere of hatred whipped up against anyone who opposes the president. "The shots were fired not only at Nemtsov but at all of us, at democracy in Russia," Gennady Gudkov, a prominent Kremlin opponent, said in a speech delivered next to the coffin.
