Remember: the stock market has NOTHING to do with Common Sense or Logic

I have received a number of notes from readers about how I sometimes say that you sometimes need to be counter intuitive when dealing with the market and that common sense does not always work as well as you would think in the market. I have been trying to think of a simple, straight forward example that would illustrate what I mean.

On the 31 December 2009 cover of Forbes Magazine they named their "Company of the Year" – Monsanto Company (MON). Everyone knows Monsanto is a great company and is the leader in technology innovations in agriculture. The stock closed that day at $81.75.

A few of days ago (April 14th) I noticed that there were 611 new 52 week highs on the NYSE and only 8 52 week lows. This is an unusually high ratio of highs to lows, so I decided to take a closer look. Obviously most stocks were moving up and making new highs and the market in general has been acting well. But as I reviewed the list I noticed one stock among the 8 companies that hit 52 week lows – Monsanto Company - 2009 "Company of the Year" according to Forbes magazine.

Since the end of 2009 Monsanto is DOWN 20.82% whereas the Dow is up 5.66% and the S&P is up 6.91%. So obviously NOT all great companies are great stocks!

But how could the company of the year be one of the worst performing stocks since 2009 year end? Maybe everyone who was going to buy the stock bought it when the cover article came out and there were no more buyers left?

Who knows? I certainly don’t. But I do know that common sense and logic work a lot better in the real everyday world than they do in the stock market.
