The Next Great Investor Idea - Trading Ideas for 2010; Favorite Solar Stocks for 2010
January 4 2010,
Welcome to the Next Great Investor Idea
We are starting out the New Year with some insight from one of our regular columnists, J Peter Lynch and his solar stock picks for 2010.
For 2009, renewable energy stocks, water stocks and natural gas stocks were always in the top 10 most searched sectors on our site. We will be starting a new column in 2010 on water stocks - so stay tuned. Water stocks started the first days trading of 2010 as the most searched inbound phrase by investors.
Mining and gold stocks gained traction as gold reached new highs but green investors stayed true to the sector.
We hope to be in much closer contact with you in 2010 and bring you new trading and investing ideas for the multiple sectors we cover.
Favorite Solar Stocks for 2010- By J. Peter Lynch
As the year comes to a close the market has certainly had a banner year with the NASDAQ up 40% and solar stocks up 42%. But if you look a little closer you will see that if you take away the top three solar stocks for 2009 (TSL,CSIQ and YGE) that the average solar stock was down approximately 1.50% for the year to date.
I think this is the beginning of the next stage of the development of the solar industry in which the stronger companies will prosper and grow, new innovative companies will appear on the scene and weaker companies (financially or technically) will be acquired or go out of business.
As a result, investors will have to be alert and focus on the strongest solar stocks and keep an eye out for new technical innovation. Keep in mind that even though solar stocks have had a great run the past few years, the vast majority of the technical innovation in this industry is STILL TO COME. The future of the industry is bright and most of the problems from 2008 - 2009 (silicon oversupply, terrible market for IPO's and lack of financing for project integrators) will diminish in 2010 and mostly disappear by 2011, setting the stage for the next phase of growth for the industry.
As to stocks for 2010 I have three stocks that I like and that I think are technically superior. The three are:
- JA Solar Holdings (JASO)
- Suntech Power Holdings (STP)
- Yingli Green Energy Holding Co. (YGE)
Each of these companies has been forming a substantial 6 to 8 month price base - JASO in the $3.50 range, STP in the $15.00 range and YGE in the $12.00 range - from which to, hopefully, move higher in 2010 and 2011.
But if I had to pick just one company that I thought had the best long term outlook, based upon excellent strength in a number of areas: financial, management, market positioning and solar technical strengths - I would have to chose Suntech Power (STP).
In addition to strong scores in the areas noted above, Suntech (see chart below) has exhibited excellent technical strength in its stock forming a nice technical base since April of this year in the $15.00 area.
