Lucent Technologies on Boeing-Led Team Awarded Secure
Border Contract With the U.S. Department of Homeland Security
Lucent and Bell Labs will provide R&D, technical and
services expertise in wireless, network integration, and security under a
contract to help design and deploy advanced communications network for
securing U.S. borders
MURRAY HILL, N.J., Sept. 21 Lucent Technologies (NYSE: LU) today
announced it is a participant on an industry team led by The Boeing Company
(NYSE: BA) that has been awarded a contract by the U.S. Department of
Homeland Security (DHS) under its Secure Border Initiative (SBI) program.
The contract for the department's technology component of the program,
called SBInet, will be performed over a three-year period with three
one-year options.

The Boeing SBInet team will create and deploy a solution that will
significantly improve the availability of information and tools to Border
Patrol agents so they can better detect, identify, classify and resolve
illegal border activity by those who pose a threat to the United States.

to Boeing and our partners in the effort to help DHS secure, strengthen and

Lucent and Bell Labs have been fully integrated into the Boeing
communications leadership team and will perform duties ranging from wireline
and wireless network design, analysis, and modeling functions spanning
voice, data, and sensor communications. Lucent's Bell Labs will also
leverage its industry leadership in forward-looking R&D, including advanced
communications, nanotechnology and sensor technologies.

Lucent brings a network transformation approach to the Boeing team that
will leverage existing Homeland Security networks and legacy RF
communications, as well as commercial wireless communications. Lucent's
expertise will also help the team enable multimedia communications
capabilities across the converged networks in SBInet via its
industry-leading IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) architecture.
