Government of Canada Invests in Ontario Solar Energy Program
OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- April 30, 2009 - Homeowners in Ontario will have the opportunity to reduce their home energy costs, thanks to the new Solar Water Heating Program. With the help of a $1.4-million investment from the Government of Canada's ecoENERGY for Renewable Heat initiative, the program will provide a significant boost to the growing clean energy industry in Canada. Pierre Poilievre, Member of Parliament for Nepean-Carleton, announced the investment on behalf of the Honourable Lisa Raitt, Minister of Natural Resources.
"This investment by the Government of Canada will lower the energy costs of homeowners - putting more money in the pocket books of Canadians," said Minister Raitt. "Not only will this project protect our environment, but this green energy technology will help stimulate the economy and create jobs for Canadians."
"Under the leadership of Prime Minister Stephen Harper, this Government is committed to keeping Canadians employed and creating jobs," said MP Poilievre. "Today's announcement will encourage homeowners to consider green energy technology and help stimulate the economy."
The Solar Water Heating Program is a joint initiative led by Bullfrog Power Inc. together with Enbridge Gas Distribution and EnerWorks. It offers financial incentives and rebates to help Ontario homeowners living in Enbridge Gas Distribution franchise areas install solar water heating systems.
A solar water heating system can supply up to 60 percent of a Canadian home's hot-water needs, cut ongoing energy and water heating costs, and reduce each household's annual greenhouse gas emissions by one tonne. Solar water heating systems are also eligible for the ecoENERGY Retrofit - Homes Grant and the Home Renovation Tax Credit.
The $36-million ecoENERGY for Renewable Heat initiative is one of a series of ecoENERGY initiatives funded by the Government of Canada with an investment of more than $3.9 billion to increase Canada's supply of clean, renewable energy.
An additional $2.4 billion is provided by Canada's Economic Action Plan to support a cleaner and more sustainable environment and help meet Canada's climate change objectives. This funding includes a new, five-year, $1-billion Clean Energy Fund and a $1-billion Green Infrastructure Fund.
