Marina Wave & Wake Attenuation | Coastal Erosion Control Protection
Wave Dispersion Technologies, Inc. (WDT) developed the WhisprWave® floating
articulated breakwater erosion / wave and wake control technology to afford
protection to marinas, beaches, and private property subject to destructive or
annoying wave / wake forces. There are three primary configurations of the
WhisprWave® floating breakwater: Ocean Floating Breakwaters, 2-Layer Floating
Breakwaters, and 3 Layer Floating Breakwaters.
Marina Wake and Wave Protection
Marinas that are not based in protective coves or estuaries are often subject to
the damaging wave and erosionary forces associated with violent storms. These
storms cause damage to both the physical marinas, as well as, their clients
vessels. During calmer times, these marinas remain concerned about the quality
of their slips. Waves, and wakes formed from passing boat traffic, can violently
rock harbored crafts making it difficult for their owners to enjoy them while in
port. There are many marinas that would like to realize added revenue from their
unused shoreline frontage by building additional docks. Frequently these marinas
are more limited by the quality of the dock space, impact of waves / wakes on
new docks, as the prime spots were built on first, than their ability to source
capital for the new construction.
Pier Point Marina on Sodus Bay in Lake Ontario, New York was the first marina to
approach the company to solve the aforementioned wave and wake protection issue.
Pier Point Marina had the additional problem that Sodus Bay freezes during the
winter. Therefore, the marina needed a solution that could compensate for this
seasonal requirement, ideally a device that did not have to be physically
removed from the lake during the winter. The WhisprWave® floating shoreline
erosion control breakwater was specifically designed to solve these erosion
problems. With a transmission coefficient of 0.1 on the expected wave spectrum,
the WhisprWave® was able to dissipate the 4-foot waves that the marina was
subject to, during highly destructive storms, to a mere 6 inches (90%
efficient). The effect enabled the marina to exand and realize greater ROI and
ROA, as noted in the marina owner's letter of satisfaction to WDT.
During the winter, when the bay freezes, the WhisprWave® modules are submerged
four to six feet below the freeze-line. This feature made the system highly
attractive to Pier Ponte as the cost of maintenance and reinstallation is
minimal.
Pier Point Marina soon realized a significant ROI with increased revenues
(additional slips, increased slip usage, and increased slip rates), a reduced
repair expense (reduced storm damage), and a minimal maintenance expense for the
WhisprWave® breakwater.
Erosion Protection
Several government agencies and property owner associations have approached the
company for an effective, environmentally sound solution to protecting beaches
from erosion and private property from shoreline and coastal erosion problems.
The company offers the patented WhisprWave® floating breakwater. The WhisprWave®
is designed to moderate and delay the loss of sand from beaches in the dry beach
and surf zone.
Traditional breakwaters, seawalls and jetties have failed primarily because they
reflect or direct wave energy in destructive ways or concentrate it in local hot
spots. Erosion problems and the scouring effects of the misdirected energy lead
to the loss of beach / coastline and undermine the structures that were meant to
be protected.
In addition, other fixed structures such as groins lead to the loss of natural
flows in down-drift beaches by interrupting the littoral flows of sand and
generally create a surplus condition on the up-drift side and a starvation
condition on the down-drift beaches.
The WhisprWave® is designed to remedy the limitations of traditional
breakwaters, seawalls and jetties. The WhisprWave® can be set in any depth of
water, but is particularly effective at 20foot depths and less, believed to
encompass most in-shore erosion problems. Unlike other systems, it has complete
portability and does not require major construction to move it. This flexibility
greatly enhances its usefulness at sites that are subject to possible changes in
needs and requirements.
Finally, the WhisprWave® has usefulness beyond beach erosion protection and
erosion control. It has applications, which would complement other wave
attenuating devices such as the Rapidly Installed Breakwater (RIB), which is
under development by the Army Corp of Engineers for use in military operations.
In addition it would logically be considered for inlets and marine anchorages to
protect surface craft from the effects of wave energy, boat wakes, and other
natural and man-made disturbances; especially in confined or high risk areas.

The modularity and the flexibility of the WhisprWave® erosion control
technologies led to discussions with the United States Navy and United States
Coast Guard about developing various maritime port security barriers and related
products for their Homeland Defense and Military Force Maritime Protection
needs. These military branches were impressed by the WhisprWave's® commercial
off-the-shelf availability*, marine engineering, product life cycle and maritime
roots.
*(Wave Dispersion Technologies, Inc. had
already invested millions of dollars in R&D and product development)
Maritime Port Security Buoys
To facilitate the needs of the US Navy, US Coast Guard,
and other government agencies, the company developed the WhisprWave® buoy line
of Homeland Security and Force Protection Maritime Technology Products. The
unique characteristics of the WhisprWave® Homeland Defense Buoys include
mobility, marine grade design and off- the-shelf availability for Homeland
Security maritime zone demarcation applications, (a requirement recently
mandated by the USCG for all nuclear power plants post 9/11). There are three
primary configurations of the buoy: Marine Security Sign Buoys ("MSSB"), Marine
Sign Buoys ("MSB"), and Power Plant and Dam Marker Buoys ("PPDMB"). These buoy
configurations can be modified to include safety orange modules, as seen in the
photos from NABLC, Norfolk, VA at the right. Three sided signs are available for
use on all WhisprWave® buoys to ensure readability from any direction of
approach, see the MSSB picture below.
Marine Security Sign Buoys ("MSSB")
After the terrorist attack on the USS Cole in Yemen on October 12, 2000, the USN
became acutely concerned about the waterfront vulnerability of their assets at
international and domestic maritime ports. WhisprWave® worked in conjunction
with the USN to construct a mobile marine security barrier for use at multiple
locations. To facilitate this need, the company designed the MSSB, a highly
visible demarcation device capable of withstanding the harsh marine environment
yet lightweight for easy deployment and recovery.
Marine Sign Buoys ("MSB")
With the ensuing terrorist attacks of 9/11,
Homeland Maritime Port Security and
Defense has become a very highly visible issue for the United States'
national homeland security and
economic welfare. The physical marine port
security around commercial vessels in the US's busiest ports is
especially disconcerting. Many of these vessels contain hazardous and/or
explosive materials that could be prime terrorist targets. Various Port
Authorities have approached WhisprWave® to develop an affordable
mobile marine port security device to
demarcate security zones around their commercial maritime ports and vessels. To
facilitate their request, the company designed the MSB, a scaled down, cost
effective version of the MSSB that is still highly visible, durable, and mobile.
Power Plant and Dam Marker Buoys ("PPDMB")
The terrorist attacks of 9/11 have also raised the concern for Homeland nuclear
power plant security. To mitigate this concern, the USCG has published temporary
final rules modifying 33 CFR Part 165 to establish temporary security zones on
waterways in the vicinity of nuclear power plants (33 CFR Part 165). The USCG is
in the process of publishing final rules to permanently establish these
maritime security zones. The company
has been in discussions with several nuclear power plant security personnel,
which has led to the development of a low cost security device to demarcate
these security zones. The company designed the PPDMB, the smallest, and most
economical version of the MSSB, which is well suited for the recent security
zone requirement imposed by the USCG.
Maritime Port Security Barriers
The company developed the WhisprWave® Force
Protection Marine Barrier Systems to assist in the demarcation of
Homeland Security Zones and serve as a physical barrier/"marine fence" to help
mitigate the risk of nautical terrorism. The flexibility of the
marine port security barrier systems
allow them to be opened to allow authorized vessels to enter or depart the
maritime Force Protection Security Zone
and then closed to re-establish the security
zone perimiter. There are four primary configurations of the WhisprWave®
barrier: Line of Demarcation ("LOD"), Small Craft Intrusion Barrier™ ("SCIB™"),
Vessel Exclusion Barrier™ ("VEB™"), and Enhanced Vessel Exclusion Barrier™ ("EVEB™").
Line of Demarcation ("LOD")
To enhance maritime security zone protection
beyond buoy deployment, the company developed the LOD, a flexible barrier of
closely connected WhisprWave® modules. With the LOD, intruders cannot easily
penetrate into the Homeland Port Security
Zone. Sufficient actions must be taken to enter it, giving the First
Responders adequate warning of a marine based security breach.
Small Craft Intrusion Barrier™ ("SCIB™")
For increased Force Protection security zone
protection, the company developed the SCIB™, a solid barrier of
WhisprWave® modules. The SCIB™ was designed both
to demarcate the marine port security zone and significantly impede hostile
small crafts from penetrating it. For more cost sensitive customers, the
company also designed the Space - Small Craft Intrusion Barrier™ ("S-SCIB™"),
a more economical version of the SCIB™ with fewer WhisprWave® modules.
More Details
Rapibly
Deployed - Small Craft Intrusion Barrier™ ("RD-SCIB™")
For increased Force Protection security zone protection and greater flexiblity
for port operations, the company developed the RD-SCIB™, a solid, yet movable
barrier of WhisprWave® modules. The RD-SCIB™ was designed both to demarcate the
marine port security zone, significantly impede hostile small crafts from
penetrating it, while being completely moveable and stowable when high value
assets are not in port.
Enhanced Small Craft Intrustion
Barrier ("ESCIB™")
The ESCIB™ is a combination of the WhisprWave Floating
Breakwater, which is designed for wave attenuation and a capture net. The
floating breakwater provides a significant platform for capture nets and also
provides wave attenuation with transmission coefficients for certain frequencies
as low as 0.125.
Vessel Exclusion Barrier™ ("VEB™")
To protect security zones from large vessels, the company developed the VEB™, an
augmented version of the SCIB™ with additional WhisprWave® modules. The VEB™ has
sufficient strength to withstand 1,500,000 foot pounds of energy over a 1.5
second period, capable of completely stopping 30-foot vessels traveling at 40
miles per hour (35 knots) and significantly impeding larger vessels.
Enhanced Vessel Exclusion Barrier™ ("EVEB™")
To facilitate additional security requirements,
the company developed the EVEB™, a VEB™ enhanced with additional security
devices including barbed wire and underwater nets.

WAKE PREVENTION DEVICE LEADING TO POSSIBILITY OF NEW WORLD RECORD TIMES
WhisprWave® SWIMMING POOL LANE DIVIDERS: WhisprWave® Miscellaneous Products
Wave Dispersion Technologies, Inc. ("WDT") developed the WhisprWave® floating
breakwater erosion protection and prevention technology to afford help stop
erosion problems at marinas, shoreline beaches, boat launches and private
property subject to destructive or annoying erosionary wave/wake forces. The
modularity and the flexibility of the WhisprWave® erosion control technology led
to discussions with the United States Navy ("USN"), United States Coast Guard ("USCG")
and various other government agencies about developing custom maritime port
security applications for Homeland Defense, Force Protection and global marine
port protection purposes. In addition, the Swimming Hall of Fame Aquatic Complex
has approached WhisprWave® about developing a swimming pool lane divider based
upon WhisprWave's® patented technology (see below)
Swimming Pool Lane Dividers ("SPLD")
Olympic caliber swimming facilities are continually looking for technological
advances to give athletes the edge they need to establish new world records. The
International Swimming Hall of Fame Aquatic Complex in Fort Lauderdale, FL (www.ishof.org)
recently approached WhisprWave® for a wave attenuation device that could provide
this edge by eliminating the wakes formed from swimming activities. To implement
their request, the company designed the WhisprWave® SPLDs, compact wave
attenuation devices capable of dissipating swimmer wakes without requiring
excessive pool space and thus leading to the possibility of new world record
times.
