Japan's jobless rate in March falls to 4.5 percent

TOKYO April 26, 2005: Japan's unemployment rate in March fell to 4.5 percent from 4.7 percent the previous month, registering lower than the market's expectation, the government said.

Economists expected the jobless rate last month to come in at 4.6 percent, the average of 22 forecasts in a Nihon Keizai Shimbun survey of brokerage houses and economic research institutes.

The jobless rate for men fell 0.3 points from the previous month to 4.7 percent and the rate for women stayed the same at 4.2 percent, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications said.

The number of jobless people totaled 3.13 million in March, down 200,000 from a year earlier, the ministry said in a preliminary report.
