Robert Wilder, Manager of the WilderHill Clean Energy Index (^ECO) noted, “One needn't look very far to see why several solar stocks have seen increasing valuations lately. With oil around unprecedented highs, Saudis unable to calm concerns they cannot make up for growing depletion of existing supply, natural gas demand outstripping supply, and coal costs rising to boot, there's an environment of new attention to alternatives."

"Here the thin film solar producers are happily anticipating rising demand along with lower costs of production. Companies in more traditional silicon PV are hoping that an increase in needed raw materials is not far off. And new areas of innovation such as concentrating solar power are beginning to grow capacity at a speed that would have been deemed overly optimistic just a few years ago. This has fed directly into the Indexes in this area such as the WilderHill Clean Energy Index (ECO): when all solar stocks dropped sharply in January-March it did the same. Since then there's been some recovery and there may be potentially some more ahead. An 'external' impact of oil at costly nose-bleed levels and 'internal' factor of solar coming down quickly in price, may mean some volatility ahead in stock valuations and so the WilderHill Index."
